How group therapy helps, plus our new parenting group
Why a small group can help you feel less alone and learn new skills, and our new Cantonese parenting group with Jeanie Kwan on November 10 and 17.

Most people picture therapy as one person talking with one therapist. Group therapy works a little differently: a small group of people with a shared concern meets with a trained therapist, who guides the conversation and keeps it safe and focused. For many people it is one of the most helpful ways to grow.
Why group therapy works
You realise you are not alone. Hearing someone else describe the same worry you carry can ease shame and isolation almost right away.
You learn from each other. Group members share what has helped them and what has not. You leave with ideas you might never have thought of on your own.
You practise new skills in a safe place. Listening, speaking up and setting limits are easier to learn when you can try them out with others and get kind, honest feedback.
You get support, and you give it. Helping someone else in the group often builds confidence and a sense of purpose.
It is often more affordable. A group usually costs less per person than the same number of individual sessions, and many workplace health insurance plans may cover it.
Is a group right for me?
Groups suit people who want support with a shared concern and are comfortable listening as well as sharing. You decide how much you say. Every member agrees to keep what is shared in the group confidential.
If you are going through a crisis, or you need more one to one attention, individual therapy may be a better first step. Our intake team is happy to help you choose.
New: Parenting Group Program 情牽孩子心
Our new Cantonese parenting group, 情牽孩子心 (Nurturing Intimate Relationships with Your Children), is for parents who want a closer, more open relationship with their children. It is led by Jeanie Kwan, Registered Psychotherapist (Ontario) and Registered Clinical Psychologist (Hong Kong).
Part 1, Talking and listening (講與聽). When your child tunes you out, when you talk but they won't listen, when you ask ten questions and get one answer: we look at the keys to parent and child communication together.
Part 2, Heart to heart (傾心事). Planning the day, everyday chats, reminders and discipline, worrying about your child without knowing what is going on: we explore how to build a relationship where you can share what is on your mind.
Each session mixes short teaching, group discussion and sharing experiences.
